Course Description:
This two-week, 60-hour summer camp will keep students on the edge of their seats as they learn the essentials of gaming including the technical components like programming with ActionScript 3.0, and the creative components of using Adobe Flash. Students will learn ActionScript 3.0, including how to manipulate movie clips; respond to user actions with variables; write functions and conditional operators; work with classes, text and arrays, advanced graphic and animation tools, and advanced interactivity.
Build a game from scratch while learning the principles of game design and development. Learn how to deal with case sensitivity, create dynamically moving enemies, add event listeners, determine a win or loss in a game, and add additional features and artificial intelligence.
The Gaming Essentials summer camp gives students the tools, skills and knowledge needed to build games that will unleash their creative and technical powers. Course Details This summer camp is offered both in-class and on-line.
Please ensure that you register in the appropriate course section. Students who register for the in-class summer camp are required to bring a USB Flash drive with which to save their project work.

Learn Where You Like This Summer!This summer, all of our computer courses are available online - so no matter where you are, as long as you have internet access, you can learn with one of our camps. To take an online camp, you must first complete Continuing Education’s free online learning course. To find out more, head to conted.ucalgary.ca, and search for summer camps. Students who register for the on-line summer camp will need to complete a free prerequisite course ICT 579 'Learning Online for Summer Camps'. Students will need a computer that is hard-wired to the Internet (Wi-Fi is less reliable) and a USB headset with speakers and microphone. Students who register for the on-line summer camp will need to have a Adobe software installed on their computer. Adobe has 30 day free downloads availalble from their web site:http://www.adobe.com/downloads. Students will need Adobe Flash, Photoshop and Illustrator. Registration for the online prerequisite: ICT 579 'Learning Online for Summer Camps' is through ContEd. Please note, this course is free to students registered in a summer camp. Notes The Gaming Essentials summer camp is an intensive two-week course designed for students aged 12 and up. Students registering for the online camp must complete ICT 579 Learning Online for Summer Camps to familiarize students with the necessary tools to achieve a successful online learning experience. Proficiencies Students do not require prior experience with the software used in this camp, however, they are expected to have the necessary familiarity with the keyboard and mouse to be able to navigate comfortably in applications like Flash. This would include knowing basic keyboarding shortcuts like cut, copy, paste, save, delete, undo, redo, etc., understanding the F1-12 functions and the right-click functions of the mouse would be valuable as well. |
